About Us

Short background of Our Art & Artist.

Shakya Stone Carving is a government-registered handicraft cottage industry. We are manufacturers and exporters of high-quality stone crafts, specializing in chaityas, sculptures of deities, animals, vessels, mythical birds like garudas and serpents, idols, letter inscriptions, and more.

We have been in the profession of stone sculpting for over 100 years. Despite being an old profession, our craftsmanship has been passed down from generation to generation, from great-grandfather to offspring. In addition to sculpting rocks found in the nearby hills of Kathmandu, we also engrave on gemstones such as turquoise, lapis, and other crystalline rocks, which can be cut and polished according to customer demand.

We have created chaityas for Hotel Hyatt, a 13-foot-tall Ratnasambhava Buddha at Nagbahal near the Golden Temple, and a 15-foot-tall chaitya at Lumbini near Shakyamuni Vihar. Bhinchhe Bahal (Mayur Varna Mahavihar) -07, Lalitpur, Nepal, is known as a major destination for stonecraft.

The art of stone sculpting was initiated by Mr. Bekha Raj Shakya and has been passed down through generations. His son, Mr. Bekha Jyoti Shakya, born in Kartik 1972 B.S at Bhinchhebahal – 07, Lalitpur, was one of Nepal’s most renowned sculptors. Inspired by his father, he began sculpting in childhood and gained extensive experience since 1986 B.S. Trained in traditional ancestral techniques, his stone craft follows a classical style. His statues of Buddha have been established in Gabahal and Tapahiti, Lalitpur. He sculpted Buddha, Chaitya, Shri Krishna, Bal Gopal, and decorative items. His art has reached both national and international audiences. He even created an idol for a foreign child. He received a Letter of Recommendation from the Lalitpur Citizen Committee for his contribution to preserving art and heritage. He passed away at the age of 83.

Embracing the family trade, Prem Ratna Shakya, the second son of Bekha Jyoti Shakya, continued the business not only as a livelihood but also as a way to preserve art and heritage. Encouraged by his father, he began sculpting at the age of 12. He creates Buddha, Chaitya, water spouts, steeples (Gazur), decorative items, and more, meeting the demands of both domestic and international clients.

The tradition continues with the next generation: Prem Ratna Shakya’s sons — Amar, Late Manoj, and Umesh — began sculpting in their teens during school holidays under the guidance of their grandfather, Bekha Jyoti Shakya. Manoj trained at Accheshwor Mahabihar for two years with sculpture maestro D.B Lama and traditional pattern expert Raj Kumar Shakya, while Amar trained there for six months.
